Sale of Lands from Ngati Whatua to
the Crown
20th October 1840
In 1840 Ngati Whatua decided to offer for sale to the Crown
about 3000 acres of land in order to get the Government of the
day to move from Kororareka to Tamaki Makaurau. Ngati Whatua no
doubt had many security and commercial reasons for wanting to
attract the Government to its rohe. Ngati Whatua has not since
laid claim to this original sale of 3000 acres.
Part of that original 3000 acres was later granted by the Crown
to Bishop Selwyn for educational purposes.
